This pedestrian tour is designed for tourists who are interested in the history of the medieval Jewish community that existed in Girona untill 1492.
Not without reason Girona is called the “cradle of Israel” - it was here that the first Kabbalist school on the Iberian Peninsula was founded by rabbi Moses ben Nahman (Ramban) in the
times when the city was one of the centers of Jewish wisdom.
Despite centuries of the Spanish Inquisition efforts, the mystical atmosphere of the persecuted and misunderstood community still remains on the streets of the Jewish neighborhood in the old
quarter.
In the summer of 2016 the new Jewish center, where the modern Jewish community is reviving, was opened. For the first time after the expulsion of the Jews in 1492 the synagogue is again
active.
During the tour, you will learn about the peculiarities of the life of medieval Jews, the reasons that prompted the Spanish kings to expel all Jews from their possessions and the plight
of the refugees forced to leave their homes.
You can complement your tour with the visit of the Museum of Jewish History, which is located on the same place where the last Girona's medieval synagogue and the Mikwe were situated.
